WSSYSA Discussion paper

West Sussex Schools and Youth Sailing Association (WSSYSA) is looking forward to its flagship event: the Annual Regatta, on 9/10th September being hosted by Dell Quay Sailing Club in Chichester Harbour. The WSSYSA executive committee look forward to seeing you there.

The Association would appear to have reached a ‘cross roads’ in its development and would like to discuss with you (the lead adult members of participating sailing clubs) the organisation of WSSYSA activities in 2018. You will know the Association has historically provided a broad scope of activities including the Topper Travellers Race Series, similar series for Lasers, Racing Rules seminar, Instructor training, and sponsored a team attending the National Schools Sailing Association’s (NSSA) annual regatta. The Executive committee has decided to consolidates its efforts in future and only support an Annual Regatta.

To spell this out, this means there will, no longer, be any support for a team to represent West Sussex at any NSSA event, no Traveller racing series nor any training events delivered by WSSYSA in future. This has been largely driven by the dwindling number of people able to commit their time to volunteer and support the Association and organise / deliver it’s activities.

Looking ahead, in order to continue operation of the Annual Regatta, the existing Executive want to widen representation and participation from the Sailing Clubs and form a larger Committee whose sole and only purpose is to deliver the Annual Regatta. This would mean attending 3 meetings a year to make the event happen and provide support to the hosting Club / Centre.

We have always been fortunate to have volunteer clubs wishing to host our annual event. If your club is keen to host the 2018 event, please contact Martin Tomlinson (on or telephone: 07377 698869) to confirm your interest as soon as possible (first come first served!).

Please give the future development of the WSSYSA some thought. The Executive shall be organising a meeting during the regatta weekend, on the 9/10th September 2017, to discuss this further.  We are all expecting another excellent turnout and look forward to recruiting sufficient support to continue running these popular events.
